YOUR HAPPY TALK MODERATOR, RESEARCHER AND STRATEGIST
Dean Stephens
Visiting the Basílica del Señor de Monserrate in the mountains above Bogatá, Colombia.
"I've always been incredibly inquisitive about human behavior. People truly fascinate me! I believe understanding ourselves and our behaviors and motivations is the best way to understand the world around us. I've been on a life-long quest to uncover and explore the 'whys' behind what, when, and how we do things. Ultimately, I finally realized my quest to understand the people around me is really a quest to understand myself.
My fascination with understanding the world led me to study foreign languages when I was young. In college, I elected to get a degree in Humanities - the study of what makes us human. After college, I started my career in advertising mostly because I was intrigued by how brand and product communications and iconography can be so persuasive as to encourage people to change their behaviors. Finally, my career in advertising led me ultimately to qualitative research. In the end, I'm doing something that I love - I get to talk to people in an effort to understand who we are and why we behave the way we do."
WHY 'HAPPY TALK'?
'Happy Talk' is inspired by one of my fundamental beliefs and approaches to qualitative research. As I alluded to in my bio above, I've always believed that we can learn and explore our humanity through comfortable, yet lively and engaging conversations.

And 'Happy Talk' is also inspired by Michener's book 'Tales of the South Pacific' which inspired the book, musical and movie 'South Pacific' in which the Bloody Mary character sings the song "Happy Talk". The final verse of the song are words to live by and truly inspire me every day:
"If you don't talk happy and you never have a dream, then you'll never have a dream come true."
